Greg Koch, the founder and CEO of Stone Brewing, has been spending a lot of time in Charlotte as of late. He visited the Tilted Kilt last year when that bar received the title of ”Most Arrogant Bar in America” after running through many kegs of Stone beers at discount prices. He also gave an impassioned speech in defense of craft beer at Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse, which was one of only seven bars across the nation to host a Stone Total Tap Takeover last year.
Koch returns to Charlotte on Feb. 17 to annoint a new “Most Arrogant Bar in America.” The title is staying in the Queen City, but it now belongs to Mac’s Speed Shop on South Blvd. Mac’s, which is well-known not only for its craft beer selection but also its quality Southern barbecue, moved enough $1 pints of Stone Arrogant Bastard and $3 pints of Double Bastard to claim this year’s title.
Greg Koch (or “Stone Greg” as he’s often referred to) will visit Mac’s Speed Shop on South Blvd. on Feb. 17 to award them with a plaque acknowledging their arrogance. To celebrate, Mac’s will tap a variety of Stone brews, including Arrogant Bastard Ale, Lucky Bastard Ale, Double Bastard Ale, Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale, Dry-Hopped 2010 Double Bastard Ale, Double Dry-Hopped Lucky Bastard Ale, and 2010 Double Bastard Ale with chipotle peppers. As someone who’s had the Smoked Porter with chipotle peppers, I suggest you seek that last one out.
It seems like Greg Koch will need to plan on heading to Charlotte at least once a year. Whether you’re enjoying a great Stone beer at Tilted Kilt, Duckworth’s or Mac’s, it’s nice that the title of “Most Arrogant Bar in America” will stay in North Carolina.
Because let’s face it — 49 other states just aren’t worthy.
